Sail training ship “MIR” – an acting symbol of maritime Saint-Petersburg, which bears the idea of international cooperation of the port cities, envoy of Saint-Petersburg abroad.

Sail training ship “MIR” was built in Poland in 1987 and belongs to Admiral Makarov State Maritime Academy.

The main characteristics of the ship:

  • foremast and mainmast - 49,5 м,

  • crew (including 144 cadets) - 199 men
  • During twelve years in operation the ship covered more than 200 000 nautical miles. More than 1 000 cadets of the Academy and other maritime educational institutions had 3 month’s shipboard practice on “MIR”.

    Taking part in the regattas and training voyages the “MIR” has called on a number of European and US ports such as: Helsinki, Copenhagen, Hamburg, Rostok, Bremerhaven, Amsterdam, London, Liverpool, Lisbon, Barcelona, Naples, Malta, Istanbul, New York and many others. Practically in every port of call mayors of the cities, other dignitaries, Russian consuls and ambassadors pay a visit to the ship.

    According to the tradition established in the last few years from April till October the ship operates in the Baltic and Northern seas, visiting about 15 – 20 ports a season. The cadets of the Academy and other maritime training institutions undergo shipboard practice onboard the ship.

    As a rule the “MIR” comes to Saint-Petersburg for 10-12 days for the Anniversary of the city.
